The Sphinx, or, The Caresses

This painting just ingrained in my mind. For several months, I keep it on the desktop and from time to time trying to unravel the meaning. I looked through a few articles about this picture, but I would not lean to anyone's opinion either, because we all know that reliably guess the signification of a particular artwork is simply impossible, for this you need to be the author himself, to know for sure what did you put there.

Relying only on intuition and the Imagination, I want to give my version of meaning of this picture. In my opinion, this picture represents a woman in love. A kind of mythical creature, but real. She is is natural in all its manifestations. She is tender, but by its nature is reactive hazardous. She is is very close to her lover, she is calm and open, but any sudden movement causes a reaction in her animal instinct. Particular attention should be paid to facial expression and location of the Sphinx's paw. Inadvertently, she can tear chest to her lover, but if he keeps her calmness then she just gently stroking his body. " In the popular imagination, even in the scientific literature, women were not regarded as fully rational beings, and their impulses, unchecked, posed a threat." Also, let's look at him. He is focused, and armed, while she even closed her eyes and smiling blissfully. He is also open. Perhaps he is a little scared and wants to escape, but other feelings superior to fear. Strange love. She protects him, he is safe from all over the world, but in some danger with her. She loves him faithfully, to the last drop, but if he wants she would leave. Do not forget that despite the bestial nature she is a woman, and he is a man. It does not help his task, but one who is aware, is forearmed.
  Unexplained, a unique spectacle.
Supernatural feelings. If they lose this string it will be like next day without heroin. Another touchdown on a rigid granite slab. Without air, without colours. Without the sky. Love is like something dangerous but vitally needed, and if you have tasted only once, then you simply can not exist without it.

Love is undoubtedly change life forever. I am very glad that the picture is motionless moment, and in the case of this painting is the perfect blessedness.
A moment of Love in which they both forever.

Khnopff has been called a "painter of the invisible," his images merely physical expressions of an idea.
